Seasoning Your Own Wood.

If you bought Greenwood you will need to Season your wood before you burn it. Seasoning firewood is the process of drying out the wood or lowering the moister content. For best burning, the moisture content of properly seasoned wood should be near 20 percent. Luckily seasoning only requires time, typically from six months to one year.

Stacking Your Firewood.

To get the best protection and drying of your firewood there is indeed a certain way to stack it. The best way to stack firewood is on top of a dry platform or raised off the ground, with the cut ends of the logs facing outwards and open to the atmosphere, while ensuring that the logs aren’t packed together too tightly and have sufficient cover if the stack will be subject to rain or snow. The goal is to keep the moisture away but to allow wind and sun to hit the firewood allowing for maximum drying.

When Is Your Firewood Seasoned?

  • It doesn't smell like wood. Most of the woody scent you get is caused by moisture.

  • It's dull in color. Seasoned wood should look gray.

  • It's not heavy. Water makes up as much as three-quarters of the weight of a green piece of wood.

  • The ends have cracks. As the wood dries out, it becomes more brittle.

  • The bark is missing or comes off easily. When the moisture goes, the bark usually goes with it.

  • It sounds hollow when you hit it against something.
